The club draws members from the greater Cedar Rapids-Iowa City area as well as from across Iowa, surrounding states, and a few distant states. Meet at the main entrance to Klein at 8:45 to sign in and get safety instructions. Map to Klein Enter the quarry at 9:00. This is a lock-in quarry ; that is, the gate is locked behind us and no one can enter or leave (except in an emergency) until noon, when a group will be let out. Others can come in at that time if they are waiting at the gate. The rest of the group will leave at about 4:00. This is a “hard-rock” working quarry. All field trippers are required to have the appropriate safety equipment stated below. No children under 12 are allowed. All children should be closely supervised. Possible finds include: millerite, coral heads, horn corals, brachiopods, bryozoans, trilobites, crinoids and maybe cephalopods, fish parts, and blastoids. The following safety requirements will be enforced: You must wear a Hard Hat. You must wear a Green or Orange Safety Vest - available from places like Menards You must wear Hard Shoes, preferably steel-toed. No open-toed sandals or tennis shoes will be allowed. You must wear Long Pants - no shorts will be allowed. Some type of safety glasses and gloves are encouraged. NOTE: If you do not have the safety equipment - you DO NOT go in. All safety equipment to be worn at all times while in the quarry! You MUST be a club member to attend this field trip: Fill out and bring the Membership Application and pay the $15 membership fee at the gate. To save time, download and fill out the club liability Waiver Travel to I-80 in Iowa City/Coralville. Take Exit #240 (Coral Ridge Exit), turn south and go to a stoplight where it tees with 2nd St. Turn Right (West). Go to 340th St SE (past Lowes) and turn left. Stay straight on Deer Creek Rd SE where 340th veers off to the right. The entrance to the quarry is at the top of the hill on the right. Safety first! Please stay at least as far away from highwalls/ledges by as many feet as the wall or dropoff is high - that is, 25 feet away (minimum) from a 25 foot highwall or 25 foot drop-off. -- -- Field Trip Sun, Oct. 13 Meet at the main entrance to Conklin at 8:45 to sign in and get safety instructions.
